Dining Room Furniture Buying and Care Guide

Buying Dining and Living Room Furniture

Housing Units offers a fantastic range of dining room and living room furniture to suit all styles and budgets.

Choosing your new furniture

Furniture is fashionable so begin by considering what style and look you want to create. There are a variety of different materials used in the construction of furniture and we have everything covered from modern and sleek to classic and elegant.

Here’s a quick guide to the different materials.

Wooden furniture

Wood is a natural product so every product is unique, with varying colours and grains. Wooden furniture is particularly affected by temperature and humidity so give some thought to where the furniture is to be located. If the room is dry or damp then it may be best to avoid wooden furniture.

Please feel free to ask any questions, our sales team are happy to listen to your requirements and advise you accordingly.

Unfinished wooden furniture

As the name suggests, this is wood which has not been treated with any stain, wax or oil and gives off a very unique and authentic look. As this is a raw, natural product, it is normal to expect marks, splits and scars. Untreated wood is porous and can warp easily. Unfinished wooden furniture is also not suitable to sit on top of under floor heating.

Lacquered or gloss furniture

This style of furniture is very modern and popular with our customers. Surfaces are prone to light scratches so it is important to protect the surface using appropriate mats and coasters.

Placed in direct light, you may see the polishing technique in the surface of some products.

Stone/marble furniture

We have an extensive range of stone furniture including travertine, marble and granite. As a natural product, you can expect differences in shading, veins/lines and colouring. Stone furniture can be susceptible to staining so take great care to protect your investment.

Take extreme care when repositioning heavy furniture, do not drag or lift whilst the base is attached.

Metal and glass furniture

For a more contemporary look, we have a stunning range of extending and static dining tables in metal and glass, with a choice of leather or fabric chairs.

Do not place glass furniture in rooms that have huge temperature variations. Do not sit or stand nor place heavy items on glass surfaces. Do not drag glass furniture, please ensure it is lifted evenly. Also very hot or very cold items should not be placed directly on top of glass furniture as extreme changes in temperature can cause damage. If the glass becomes chipped / damaged, please contact us.

Do not strike the glass with hard or pointed objects.

Dining Chairs

Dining chairs are not office chairs and should not be used as such. We have a selection of office chairs that are designed for this purpose

Top 10 Tips For Caring For Your Furniture

  1. Don’t place furniture too close to direct heat, air conditioning units or in direct sunlight.
  2. Make sure the air in your room is not too humid or too dry.
  3. Always move furniture by lifting. Dragging or pushing can damage fixings and affect stability. Some items of furniture may need to be disassembled before they can be moved.
  4. Carry stone or travertine table tops vertically, never horizontally to move them.
  5. Use table mats on all surfaces to protect the finish from hot plates and drinks.
  6. Never put hot dishes or cups onto a table top or cabinet.
  7. Take care with sharp objects such as cutlery and pens and avoid dragging crockery across your table.
  8. Never use tables to support your weight when getting up. Tables are not designed to support the weight of a person.
  9. Don’t place heavy items on drop down leaves or doors and don’t overload shelves with weight.
  10. Never rock backwards or stand on dining chairs.
