About Bugaboo

Bugaboo means mobility. Bugaboo is a Dutch mobility company headquartered in Amsterdam with offices around the globe. Founded in 1999 by designer Max Barenbrug and physician Eduard Zanen, their mission is to excite every person on the move. Their passion is for innovation results in products that inspire people to get out and explore the world.

Did you know that?

  •  A Bugaboo Cameleon consists of 250 different parts.
  • Their Chinese colleagues are able to have a nap after lunch, at the office where all the lights are turned off for 20 minutes.
  • That they perform 1500 quality control tests on each stroller, only 600 of these are required by the authorities but they created another 900 to push their own boundaries and set the standard in the industry.
  • Most parts are measured to the exact millimetre by a special 3D machine developed for Bugaboo. Every functional white-coloured button on a Bugaboo stroller is designed and manufactured to be operated up to 100,000 times.
  • All their strollers are tested with at least a 17kg dummy in the seat to simulate the maximum weight of a child.
  • Their strollers are tested on a track with 20,000 bumps.
  • Each Bugaboo stroller can ride at least 9000 kilometres, that’s the distance from LA to Tokyo.
  • In the past 4 years, Bugaboo has introduced 1400 process improvements based on ideas from their factory workers.
  • It can take up to 6 years from the first sketch to final stroller.
  • Bugaboo strollers are shipped to 52 countries straight from their factory in Xiamen.
  • Bugaboo believes that working overtime in a factory environment isn’t healthy, their factory closes in the afternoon and their factory workers are compensated for not working overtime.
  • They work with around 150 preferred suppliers who are frequently visited and tested by our inspectors on our quality and CSR standards.
  • Per week Bugaboo produces around 2000 strollers.
  • Their most skilled sewers have over 10 years of experience.
  • It can take up to 30 steps to sew the fabric for one Bugaboo stroller seat.
  • Continuously updating and improving their products is at the heart of who they are and what they do. In the last year Bugaboo had 7 product improvements on existing products for better safety, usability and looks.
  • It takes up to 1 hour to assemble a Bugaboo stroller, assembling an average car only takes 30 minutes more.
  • They have their own in-house nurse at the factory to tend to any healthcare issues.
  • Bugaboo has sports clubs, organises yoga sessions and swimming lessons for all Chinese employees.
  • Almost 1000 people are employed at their Xiamen factory and they all have a clear growth path which they are encouraged to develop.
  • All their seamstresses are given free training prior to starting work at the Factory.
  • Bugaboo Xiamen won a global CSR award in 2013 awarded by BENCHAM (Benelux Chamber of Commerce)
  • Bugaboo was offered a rare certification by Chinese governmental authorities (CIQ) meaning they can perform their own quality/customs control. The shipping process is streamlined as containers can remain sealed. There are only approximately 150 companies in China that have obtained this certificate.
