Why do toddlers splatter mum, dad, the ceiling and walls with their food? The answer could lie in frustration with their feet.
Nursery goods specialists Coo Chi Coo, whose store is at Housing Units near Oldham, has introduced a range of dining furniture that appeals to little feet as much as big appetites.
“You don’t realise it until you don’t have it, but imagine sitting on a barstool with no foot rest or support – and then try to lean forward and eat,” said Tina Metcalfe of Coo Chi Coo.

“It’s only then that you realise just how difficult a toddler or baby might find eating: all their weight is on their backside, they’re trying to lean forward from their waist, struggle with balance because they have nowhere to rest their feet, the table is either too distant or too high, and, of course, it’s also so uncomfortable.”
And to demonstrate what they go through at mealtime, Coo Chi Coo has brought in an oversized version – in adult sizes – which illustrates precisely how difficult the lack of foot support can be at mealtimes.
The Stokke range, from Germany, has been designed with babies and toddlers in mind.
It all started when designer Peter Opsvik observed how uncomfortable his son was sitting in an ordinary chair. His son had grown out of his high chair and was now sitting with his feet dangling and his arms still unable to reach the tabletop.
For Peter Opsvik the obvious solution was to lift the level of the chair's floor. This in turn lifted his son up to the table so he could rest his elbows on the table whilst having a stable 'floor' under his feet.
This proved the most natural solution, one that allowed freedom and variation of movement.
