PLASTIC BAGS BINNED AS HOUSING UNITS RIPS INTO PAPER.

They may be green, but they’re going greener still at Housing Units, the leading home furnishings retailer.

North Manchester-based Housing Units is ditching their green coloured plastic bags and sourcing massively more ecologically-friendly recyclable paper bags.

“Finding genuinely ecologically-friendly material for shopping bags is not as easy as it sounds,” said Nick Fox of Housing Units.

“The base material may be environmentally friendly, but some of the processes to turn it into bags most certainly are not.

“The bags have to be strong enough to cope with some pretty heavy items, resilient enough to survive getting wet – but we also have to check the manufacturing processes to ensure there are no harmful materials or chemicals involved in production or printing.

“However, we believe we have found a suitable source, and plan to introduce the new paper bags in June 2008.”
