When Christmas decorations appear in stores in September there’s the inevitable outcry – but one Manchester retailer had such a successful Christmas 2007 that they’re already set up for 2008’s festive fortnight.
Sales of 2007 Christmas decorations at leading Manchester-based home furnishing retailer Housing Units were up by 40% on the same period in 2006 – and not only have they already planned their 2008 Christmas department layout, they’ve already completed this year’s range.

“Every business means to do it, and few do – but we’ve made a special effort to react to what we’ve learnt from Christmas 2007 while it’s fresh in our minds, and we’re pretty well fully prepared for this year,” said Nick Fox of Housing Units.
“In fact, we could probably set up the department within a few days – we’ve earmarked 5,000 square feet of floor space, a 50% increase on 2007.

“What we found in 2007 was that people really could do with some help with decoration direction, so we experimented with some colour and style-coordinated themes – and we clearly hit the nail on the head: the sales were far higher than any previous year.

“We also found that with such a big and varied Christmas decorations department, plus the fabled family business feel of Housing Units, that whole families were spending half a day selecting their decorations.”
